Sarajevo is the capital and largest urban centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its valley location, combined with heavy reliance on fossil-fuel-based heating and private vehicles, contributes to severe episodes of air pollution. The Sarajevo Functional Urban Area holds the EU Mission Label under the Mission for 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities and is committed to reducing air pollution by promoting active mobility and decreasing reliance on vehicles with internal combustion engines. Current initiatives include modernising public transport, expanding tram and cycling infrastructure, improving multimodal journey planning, and using digital tools and computer vision to assess cycling infrastructure and safety.
Organisation role in the consortium
Sarajevo is one of the Lead Cities in the DynamiCity project and will develop an Urban Healing Forest near a hospital for children undergoing cancer treatment. The demonstrator will connect health, nature and sustainable mobility by introducing safe lanes for walking and cycling, improving accessibility, and incorporating green, restorative and public-space elements that encourage physical activity and support the wellbeing of patients, families, hospital staff and the wider community.
