The Brussels Capital Region is one of the 3 Regions in Belgium. It covers 19 municipalities and is home to more than of 1 200,000 inhabitants. Road safety is at the heart of its current Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. In addition, it seeks to encourage a modal shift, enhance quality of life, ensure individuals’ autonomy in their mobility through improved accessibility while promoting mobility practices that are favourable to physical and mental health.
Organisation role in the consortium
As a Lead City, the Brussels Capital Region aims to foster inclusive and accessible multi-modality linking active mobility with public transport. By evaluating sidewalk thanks to a methodology developed by the Belgian Road Research Center, the project pilot will build a geo-localised dataset to be used in route planners’ apps. This will help to improve accessibility information in route planner app to enable users to search for the routes best suited to their mobility requirements. The result of the inclusion of pedestrian pathways accessibility in the accessible search option of route planner’s app will be tested with health professionals and patients.
