AGL is a dense suburban municipality located just 5km from Athens’ city centre, hosting an estimated population of 65k inhabitants. AGL is strongly affected by pressure on public spaces and urban congestion caused by high private car dependency. Modal split is estimated at 55% private car, 30% walking, 10% public transport and 5% cycling & micro-mobility, highlighting the need to enhance active travel options. The rapid urbanisation and scarcity of green areas further aggravate its urban heat island, discouraging outdoor physical activity. Despite these challenges, AGL’s Air Quality Index is 40, categorised as ‘good’. Its SUMP encourages active, low-emission transport and sets specific targets for a 20% increase in walking, 10% in cycling and 15% reduction in private car use by 2030. The municipality has been actively involved in EU initiatives to become a smart and sustainable urban environment.
Organisation role in the consortium
In the context of the DynamiCity project AGL will implement a multi-level demonstrator focusing on 1) individual, 2) community, and 3) digital levels, encouraging regular walking through structured and gamified interventions. Learning from BXL, AGL will also explore new functionalities for its app, including information regarding sidewalk accessibility for people with reduced mobility. QR-code checkpoints will be installed throughout the grove of Aigaleo to track progress, incentivise route completion.
