City of Edinburgh Council

Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital city, located in the south east of Scotland (north east of the UK) and has a population of about 500,000 residents. It is a UNESCO World Heritage city, and is host to the world’s largest arts festival in August of each year (Edinburgh Festivals).

Edinburgh aims to be a net-zero city by 2030, and transport is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gasses for the city. In terms of cycling, Edinburgh has a plan to expand its segregated cycling network so that every household is within 250-400m of a high quality cycling route. Edinburgh has recently completed construction of some significant active travel projects, with two winning the Excellence in Transport Design award (Scottish Transport Awards). The Council’s sustainable transport policies (City Mobility Plan and Our Future Streets) have also been awarded Best Practice in Transport Planning awards. The city has also recently facilitated installation of an e-bike sharing scheme.

Edinburgh is one of the lead cities in the Dynamicity project, focussing on behaviour change towards cycling where cycling infrastructure has been developed in the city. Edinburgh’s element of the project will implement the ‘Cycle Nation’ tool developed by University of Glasgow, informed by behavioural science, supporting participants to cycle more for everyday journeys.
